Las Vegas weather facts every pet owner should know

  • July highs in Las Vegas average 104.5F and even overnight lows average 82.0F, so in midsummer there is no truly cool walk window: keep outings brief, shaded, and at dawn.
  • Las Vegas hit an all-time record 120F on July 7, 2024; sunbaked pavement on days like that can burn paw pads in seconds, so the seven-second hand test is non-negotiable.
  • Desert winters are a pet's reward: December and January highs average 56.9F to 58.5F, perfect all-day walking weather for dogs who suffered through summer.
  • With only about 0.2 inches of snow a year and low desert humidity, hydration is the year-round issue: carry water for your dog on any walk longer than 15 minutes.

Las Vegas pet weather questions

From June through September, almost every afternoon: average highs run 94.9F to 104.5F, deep in the dangerous zone above 90F. Walk at dawn, when July temperatures are nearest the 82.0F overnight average, keep it short, and always hand-test the pavement.
Asphalt in the Mojave sun gets far hotter than the air, and Las Vegas air alone has reached 120F. Press the back of your hand to the pavement for seven seconds; if you cannot hold it, use booties, walk on grass, or wait for evening. Grass and shaded routes matter from May through September, when highs average 88.5F and up.
It is the best season. December and January highs average 56.9F and 58.5F with lows around 40F, comfortable for nearly every breed at any hour. Only thin-coated or senior dogs need a light coat for early morning walks below 45F.
