San Diego weather facts every pet owner should know

  • San Diego's warmest month, August, averages just a 77.3F high, meaning most of the year sits at or below the 77F caution line: arguably the best dog-walking climate of any big US city.
  • January averages a 66.4F high and a 50.3F low, so even midwinter walks rarely call for a dog coat.
  • Extremes still happen: San Diego hit 111F on September 26, 1963, so watch for fall Santa Ana heat spikes before afternoon beach runs.
  • With no measurable snow in its normals and only about 9.8 inches of rain a year, mostly December through March, true indoor days are rare for San Diego pets.

San Diego pet weather questions

Rarely, by the averages: even August, the warmest month, averages 77.3F, right at the 77F caution line. On unusual days apply the standard rules, cautious above 77F, risky above 82F, and skip walks at 90F and up, which mostly happens during Santa Ana events.
September averages a 77.2F high but holds the all-time record of 111F (September 26, 1963), so fall Santa Ana winds are the one time San Diego dogs face real heat risk. On those days walk early, carry water, and palm-test the pavement.
Almost never: January, the coolest month, averages a 66.4F high and a 50.3F low, above the 45F coat threshold. Only tiny, senior, or freshly groomed dogs may want a light layer on damp winter mornings near 50F.
