San Francisco weather facts every pet owner should know

  • San Francisco may be the best year-round dog walking city in America: average highs range only from 57.8F in January to 70.2F in September, almost never touching the 77F caution line.
  • The famous summer fog keeps July average highs to 66.3F, cooler than September's 70.2F, so peak summer here is genuinely more comfortable for thick-coated dogs than early fall.
  • It essentially never snows in San Francisco, and the record low is only 27F, so booties and heavy winter coats can stay in the closet, though damp 40s evenings warrant a sweater for small dogs.
  • Heat is rare but real: the city hit an all-time record 106F on September 1, 2017, and dogs acclimated to 60s weather struggle fast in a heat wave, so have an indoor cooling plan for those few days.

San Francisco pet weather questions

Almost never by the calendar: even the warmest month, September, averages just 70.2F, below the 77F caution line. The exception is a fall heat wave, like the record 106F day on September 1, 2017, when fog-acclimated dogs overheat quickly, so on those rare hot days walk early and keep it short.
Most dogs do not, since even January averages a 57.8F high. But winter lows sit in the mid 40s (46.6F average in January) and wind plus fog makes it feel colder, so small, lean, or senior dogs benefit from a light sweater on evening walks.
Western, ocean-facing neighborhoods can run 10 or more degrees cooler than the sunny east side on a summer day, in a city where July averages only 66.3F overall. That microclimate patchwork means you can usually pick a comfortable walking route year-round, a luxury few cities offer.
