Seattle weather facts every pet owner should know

  • Seattle is built for dog walking: even the warmest month, August, averages highs of just 77.6F, barely brushing the 77F caution line, so most summer days are walk-all-day weather.
  • Winter lows average 37.7F in January, above the truly risky range, but the constant drizzle means a quick-dry towel by the door does more for Seattle dogs than a heavy parka.
  • Snow is rare at about 6.3 inches a year, so when it does fall the city (and its dogs) get a surprise; keep first-snow walks short since local paws rarely see ice.
  • The June 2021 heat dome pushed Seattle to an all-time record 108F, proof that even mild-climate pets need a heat plan: fans, shade, and cool floors matter here precisely because so few homes have air conditioning.

Seattle pet weather questions

Rarely by the averages, since July and August highs sit at 77.4F and 77.6F, right at the 77F caution line. The danger is heat waves like June 28, 2021, when the city hit a record 108F: Seattle dogs are not heat-acclimated, so on any day above 82F walk at dawn and skip afternoon outings.
Do not wait for a dry window that may not come: from October through March highs run 47F to 60F with frequent drizzle. A water-resistant coat for short-haired dogs, a towel at the door, and regular ear checks (damp ears invite infections) keep the routine going all winter.
Not often. January lows average 37.7F, above the 20 to 32F caution band, and snowfall averages only 6.3 inches a year. When a cold snap or rare snow does arrive, shorten walks and add a coat for small or senior dogs, since local pets have little cold conditioning.
