Vancouver weather facts every pet owner should know

  • Vancouver has the mildest winters of Canada's big cities: January highs average 44.2F and lows stay near 34.5F, so most dogs can walk comfortably all winter with little more than a light coat.
  • Snow is a bit part here, only about 14.4 inches a year on average, but the rainy season from November to March means a dog raincoat and a towel by the door earn their keep.
  • Summers are made for dogs: July highs average just 72.3F, below the 77F caution line, so midday walks are usually safe even in peak summer.
  • Wedged between the Pacific and the North Shore mountains, Vancouver's record high at the airport is only 94F, set July 30, 2009, though rare heat events mean owners should still know the 82F risky and 90F danger thresholds.

Vancouver pet weather questions

Rarely too cold: January lows average 34.5F, above the 20F to 32F caution band, so most healthy dogs walk year round. Small, senior, or short-coated dogs still benefit from a coat below 45F, which covers most December through February mornings.
From November through March highs sit between 44.2F and 50.2F with frequent rain, a combination that chills wet dogs quickly. A waterproof coat for thin-coated breeds, towel-drying after walks, and checking paws for grit keep the wet season pleasant.
Occasionally. Vancouver averages only 14.4 inches of snow a year, mostly in December and January, but when it falls the city applies salt that can irritate pads. Rinse paws after snowy walks and keep sessions short when temperatures drop below freezing.
