Tokyo weather facts every pet owner should know

  • August in Tokyo averages an 88.3F high with lows of 74.3F, so pavement never fully cools overnight; dawn is the only reliably safe summer walk window.
  • Tokyo's record high of 103.1F was set on July 20, 2004, and on days anywhere near that, midday asphalt can burn paw pads, so summer walks belong at first light.
  • Despite the hot summers, Tokyo averages only about 3.1 inches of snow a year, nearly all in January and February, so most city dogs never need serious snow gear.
  • January highs average 49.6F with lows of 34.2F: brisk but very walkable, making winter the season for the long park walks that humid summer rules out.

Tokyo pet weather questions

From late June through mid September. July and August average highs of 85.8F and 88.3F, well past the 82F risky band, and Tokyo's humidity makes it feel worse. Walk at dawn, keep midday outings to a few minutes, and press the back of your hand to the asphalt before every summer walk.
Rarely: the yearly average is about 3.1 inches, almost all in January and February. The bigger winter consideration is the 34.2F average January low, so put a coat on small or senior dogs once temperatures drop below 45F.
June's tsuyu rains arrive with average highs of 79.0F and lows of 65.3F, and the humidity pushes the heat stress of a 79F day toward the 82F risky band. Favor early-morning walks between showers and dry your dog's paws and coat afterward to prevent skin problems.
