Boarding or a Sitter When a Heat Wave Lands
You booked the trip in February. The forecast for the week you leave now says 99°F, and who looks after your dog is suddenly a different question. Most boarding-versus-sitter comparisons weigh cost, socialisation and stress, and none mention weather. A strange omission, because in a heat wave the decision stops being about care and starts being about buildings.

The quick answer
On a normal summer week a sitter at home is the kinder option and boarding is the more supervised one, and either is fine. A heat wave collapses that into one question with almost nothing to do with pet care: which building will still be cool if the power goes out?
Because that is the actual risk. Heat waves are when the grid is under most strain, and a house with no air conditioning, or air conditioning and no generator, is a worse place to be than a facility that has thought about it. Frequently it is the other way round. The point is that it has an answer, and almost nobody asks.

The five questions to ask a kennel about heat
Ask these once, on a calm day. The speed of the answer tells you as much as the content: a facility that has thought about heat answers instantly.
- "Is the whole building air conditioned?" Plenty cool the lobby and run the kennel on fans. Ask which room your animal sleeps in.
- "What is your backup if the power fails on a 100°F day?" Answers range from a whole-building generator to nothing. Any of them is fine to know in advance and none is fine to discover afterwards.

- "How are dogs cooled if one overheats?" You want cool water over the whole body, moving air and a vet relationship, not a fan and a cold floor. A 2023 randomised trial in Animals comparing cooling methods in working dogs found partial immersion in room-temperature water cooled fastest and was best tolerated.
- "Who is in the building overnight?" The biggest difference between facilities. Overnight staff, a watched camera, or nobody until 7am are three different products.
Ask a sitter the same list. Overnight or two drop-ins? What is the plan if the AC quits at 2pm and you are unreachable? A good sitter finds these questions reassuring rather than insulting.
Why heat waves and outages arrive together
This is what makes the boarding question different from the ordinary one. Heat does two things to a grid at once: it drives demand up as everyone turns on air conditioning, and it cuts supply, because power plants lose output and trip offline in extreme heat. The US Energy Information Administration, summarising a North American Electric Reliability Corporation assessment, reported that two thirds of North America was at risk of energy shortfalls during periods of extremely high demand, and noted that wide-area heat waves also limit the transfers between regions that normally cover a local shortfall.
Which is why "we have air conditioning" is half an answer. The question is what happens on the day it is asked to do the most, which is also the most likely day for it to have no electricity.
There is a second reason to take this seriously, out of our own climate data, and it is not the cities you would guess. We compared each city's record high against its hottest month's average high, and the biggest jumps are all mild-summer places.

Miami's worst day ever is nine degrees above a normal August afternoon, and every building there is air conditioned because it has to be. San Francisco's worst day is thirty six degrees above normal, and a great many buildings there have no cooling at all. The heat wave risk is not in the hot cities, it is in the mild ones, and that applies to the kennel as much as to your house.

When a sitter at home is safer
A sitter is the better answer more often than the boarding industry would like:
- Your home genuinely holds temperature. Central air, or good shade and thermal mass. Test it before you go rather than assuming.
- Anxious, reactive or elderly pets. Stress raises body temperature and respiratory effort, so a heat wave is the worst week to add a loud, strange building.
- Cats, almost always. They do badly with relocation and well with routine, so a cool house with a familiar visitor is usually best.
- The sitter stays overnight. Drop-ins leave a twelve hour gap, and a failed air conditioner at 9pm is a twelve hour problem.
- Your pet has specific needs a busy facility cannot reliably meet.

When boarding wins
And the other column, underweighted because a kennel feels like the less loving choice:
- Your home has no air conditioning. The big one, particularly in the mild-summer cities above. Blinds down in an empty house is not a cooling strategy.
- Backup power. A facility with a generator has something your house almost certainly does not.
- Flat-faced dogs and cats. Brachycephalic animals have the least margin, because the airway that does the cooling is the compromised one. - Somebody is awake. Overnight staffing finds a problem in minutes, not at breakfast.
- Medical fragility. Seniors, or anything your vet has asked you to watch. It is worth knowing how little margin an older pet has, and a facility with veterinary support on call is a real advantage.
One thing boarding adds that a sitter does not: the drive. The car is the hottest place your pet will be all week. Book drop-off and pick-up early, and never leave the animal in a parked car for even the length of the paperwork.
None of this says boarding is safer in general. It says that on the three worst days of the summer the building matters more than the arrangement, and the building with staff and a generator is usually the kennel. The rules that exist, and the ones that do not
There is a real federal temperature standard for animal housing, and it is more specific than most owners expect. Under the Animal Welfare Act regulations, 9 CFR 3.2 on indoor housing facilities requires that ambient temperature must not rise above 85°F for more than four consecutive hours when dogs or cats are present, and that fans, blowers or air conditioning must be provided whenever it reaches 85°F or higher.
That is an excellent benchmark and, for most boarding kennels, not a binding one, because they sit outside that licensing scheme. What applies instead is state and municipal law, and state pet rules vary enormously, addressing weather barely or not at all in many places. The contrast worth noticing is air travel, where airlines enforce hard temperature cutoffs and will simply refuse to carry an animal. A kennel in the same city may have no number at all.
The consequence is not that kennels are dangerous. Most are run by people who care a great deal. It is that the 85°F number is yours to ask about rather than a regulator's to enforce, and the answer is the only inspection most facilities get.
So ask by email, to have the answer in writing, and take the National Weather Service heat safety guidance seriously about the days themselves. Heat does not look dangerous from indoors.

Some are throughout, some cool only the office and lobby and run the kennel area on fans, and some are not cooled at all. No rule settles it, so ask specifically: is the room my animal sleeps in air conditioned, and is the outdoor area shaded.
